Art Opening Showcases Creative Projects by Lakehead Orillia Media Studies and Art Students

Students of Lakehead University’s Media Studies and Art programs are presenting an end-of-semester art opening event to celebrate and showcase their art projects. The event, entitled, “informe,” takes place at the University Avenue campus on Wednesday, April 10 from 6 to 9 pm.

Media Studies for Social Change is a new degree program offered at the Orillia campus as part of the Interdisciplinary Studies department. Informe will be presented as an art opening and will feature performative sculpture, organic documentary production, culture jamming, digital photography, painting and mixed media, along with the chance to meet the artists and enjoy refreshments. Admission is free and all students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the community, are invited to attend.

Highlights...

Premiere: Organic Documentary by i[MEDIA]te (Media Studies: Media Production)
Ontario’s oldest institution for the developmentally challenged was set on a sprawling acreage on the shores of Lake Couchiching. From behind the brick walls of the Huronia Regional Centre (HRC) (1876-2009), come allegations of systemic neglect, frequent abuse and regulated slavery. Media Production collective Im[MEDIA]te presents an organic documentary featuring the voices of three individuals who speak to the impact of segregation and institutional life.

Culture Jamming: an activist method of intervention in public spaces of culture to challenge dominant media messages. Engaging in culture jamming, Media Studies 1030 students have created “subvertizements” to hijack the message of the now-iconic silhouette iPod ads, critiquing specific aspects of capitalism and consumer culture.

Works of visual art: works by the students of Visual Art 0510, “Fundamentals of Art,” including studies in colour theory, perspective, line, composition, and concepts using watercolour, acrylic, and mixed-media collage. There will be a three-dimensional piece constructed and dismantled during the showcase event.
