In this 2-hour workshop we will explore digital collections of original documents. We will discuss the creation, selection, and preservation of archival records, and how you can read, ask questions of, and understand them in context. We will be exploring 19th and 20th Canadian and American history sources, though with advance notice the workshop can be modified to meet other particular interests. This workshop is for anyone interested in learning more about conducting archival research. (A larger screen, rather than a phone or tablet, is recommended if possible.)

By attending this workshop you will:

  • understand how archival documents are preserved, digitized, and shared with the public;
  • be able to locate digital archival collections relevant to your research;
  • have practiced reading and discussing original documents.

During the workshop, you'll learn how to export data from scholarly databases like Web of Science into VOSviewer, identify key research themes, influential researchers, and significant publications in your field, and create visualizations based on publication details such as titles, keywords, and abstracts.

Dr. Valerie Pringle will be the special guest speaker for this years' Annual General Meeting of the Alumni Association of Lakehead University (AALU), being held on Wednesday, September 25th via Zoom.

Lakehead's most recent Honorary Degree recipient, Valerie enjoyed a distinguished career as a broadcaster for 50 years. She covered major stories of the day, from national elections and Royal weddings to space launches and the Olympics. She has championed AIDS research for CANFAR, played a key role in building the Trans Canada Trail across the country, and tirelessly advocated for the treatment of mental illness. In 2006, Valerie was honoured with the Order of Canada for her work in broadcasting and philanthropy.

An audience Q&A will follow, moderated by Yolanda Wanakamik, President, AALU.
