With the growing focus on sustainable transportation, Battery Electric Buses (BEBs) have emerged as a viable solution. BEBs have received significant recognition as an environmentally conscious and sustainable means of transportation. Designing an effective strategy, which encompasses placing charging sites and implementing proper charging mechanisms, is crucial to ensuring the efficient and consistent charging of BEBs in an electrified public transit system.This research endeavours to tackle the challenge of efficient charging strategies including placement of charging stations, cost of running electric buses, and adhering to the bus timetable. To this end, this thesis outlines a four-step approach for transit system planners to attain optimal solutions, including worst-case energy consumption calculation, off-service charging site placement, off-service (overnight) charging mechanisms, on-route charging planning, determining the required number of BEBs, and their integration into a fully electric transit system. Four novel methods are designed for planning: the Constrained Greedy Clustering (CGC) algorithm, the Priority Charging Mechanism (PCM), the Constraint Affinity Clustering Algorithm (CACA), and timetable tuning. A case study based on the real-world Thunder Bay, ON transit system is discussed to validate the proposed methodologies and assess their effectiveness in improving the BEB fleet’s overall performance. The research results demonstrate significant improvements in operational efficiency, cost reduction, and environmental sustainability by implementing the proposed charging infrastructure optimization strategies.

Abstract:
Since the delivery of Louise Brown in 1978, the first child born as a result of in vitro fertilization (IVF), the advances in the field of assisted reproductive technologies have been remarkable. Innovations in the areas of the treatment of infertility and improvements in laboratory techniques have enabled many couples to achieve their dream of having a child. This presentation reviews important advances that have made the field of assisted reproduction a dynamic subspecialty including In vitro fertilization, Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, Preimplantation genetic testing, embryo culture, embryo cryopreservation et al and provides insight into some exciting areas of research that will continue to revolutionize the field in the future.

Dr. Tao’s Biography:
Dr. Tao is a CFAS certified ART laboratory director and ABB board certified Embryologist, Andrologist and High Complexity Clinical Laboratory Director (HCLD). He received his PhD in Embryo Biotechnology from China Agricultural University and the Institut fur Tierzucht und Tierverhalten, FAL, Germany (joint program), and completed extensive post-doctoral training at the University of Missouri. Dr. Tao has worked in the field of Assisted Reproductive Technologies for over 30 years. From 1988 to 1999, Dr. Tao had been engaged in the studies on embryo biotechnologies, including nuclear transfer, gene transfer, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, in vitro maturation, in vitro fertilization, embryo freezing and embryo splitting in the pig, cow, rabbit, goat, and mouse. In 2000, Dr. Tao joined Conceptia Reproductive Clinic, Moncton, NB, Canada, as a senior embryologist. He established all ART programs and ran the IVF Laboratory. With his added expertise, Conceptia Reproductive Clinic became one of the top fertility clinics in Canada at that time. Dr. Tao then joined several other fertility clinics in North American as IVF laboratory director between 2005 and 2018. During these years, he acquired extensive knowledge in the areas of human ICSI, IVF, IVM, TESA, Egg freezing, PGT, Assisted Hatching, Blastocyst Culture and Vitrification, Cryopreservation. Dr. Tao also served as an Assistant Professor in the OB/GYN department at the Mercer University School of Medicine. He has over 40 publications in peer review journals to his credit. Dr. Tao currently join IVF Canada Inc as a laboratory scientific director. Dr. Tao’s 30 years of experience in assisted reproduction has been an asset to establishment and the continuing growth of our ART program. Dr. Tao is a member of many professional associations, such as Canadian Fertility & Andrology Society; the American Society for Reproductive Medicine; European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology. Currently Dr. Tao co-supervises Biotechnology PhD student Devon Dickson with Dr. Wensheng Qin on a project of Mitochondrial DNA Content as a Novel Biomarker to Improve Embryo Implantation Potential.
