Lakehead’s final SOS lecture explores how urban ecosystems affect the quality of our water
(August 14, 2013 – Orillia, ON)
Lakehead University’s “Summer of Sustainability” (SOS) series concludes with a final lecture identifying the role of urban ecosystems in preserving the quality of our water. This eye-opening presentation takes place on Tuesday, August 20 at 7 pm at Lakehead Orillia’s University Avenue campus.
Dr. Andrea Kirkwood, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), will present her recent research on storm water ponds and urban creeks, highlighting their ecological integrity and role in source water protection.
In Canada, 81% of the population lives in urban areas and this number is only expected to rise. Due to high population density and intensive land modification, urban regions are typically thought of as degraded environments and consequently their value has been ignored.
“As a result of mounting concerns over source water protection, both the impacts — and contributions — of urban ecosystems must be considered,” explains Dr. Kirkwood.

“Participants can expect an in-depth discussion on how we have been influencing the quality of our source waters without even knowing it,” said SOS series organizer Dr. Thamara Laredo of Lakehead Orillia. “It will be a great lecture to end the summer series!"
