Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner
The Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner (PHCNP) Program is a unique program offered at Lakehead University as part of the Council of Ontario University Programs in Nursing (COUPN) PHCNP Programme. A consortium of nine Universities (including Lakehead University) offers this program.
The Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner (PHCNP) program courses may be taken at Lakehead University as part of the Master of Nursing with PHCNP or Master of Public Health Nursing Specialization with Nurse Practitioner Electives Programs.
Master of Public Health with Specialization in Nursing with Nurse Practitioner Electives

Applicants who currently have a Graduate Degree in Nursing, or equivalent (e.g., Master of Public Health with Nursing Specialization) may be eligible for the PHCNP certificate program.
All students in the Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Certificate Program must complete the following 7 required courses:
- NURS 5610: Pathophysiology for Nurse Practitioners
- NURS 5630: Roles and Responsibilities
- NURS 5615: Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnosis 1 (AHAD 1)
- NURS 5616: Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnosis II (AHAD II)
- NURS 5635 Therapeutics in Primary Health Care I
- NURS 5636: Therapeutics in Primary Health Care II
- NURS 5840: Integrative Practicum

All Lakehead University PHCNP students must complete the required tutorials for Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnosis (I and II) and Therapeutics I and II at the Lakehead University campus, and clinical placements within Lakehead University’s geographical border (Thunder Bay and/or northwestern Ontario). This would be east to Wawa, north to Hudson’s Bay, west to the Manitoba border, and south to the U.S. border.
