The field of engineering is generally associated with finding solutions for real world problems in an analytical fashion using the math, science and problem-solving skills. At Lakehead we believe engineers must also possess excellent communication skills as well as an understanding of the business, legal, and societal issues that impact development of the technological products and processes required to meet the demands of a global economy.

As a software engineer, you will apply engineering methodologies and good practices for managing the creation of software from conception to the release of the finished product, including analysis, design, coding, testing and deploying software systems.

Software has become a fundamental part of modern society, while continuing to evolve in size, scope, and complexity. As a result, there is an immediate and important need for qualified software engineers who can model entire software and hardware systems, who can lead interdisciplinary project teams of designers and developers, and who can ensure quality, integrity, and safety of the software infrastructure that the public depends on every day.

Our Software Engineering program is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). We offer several entry points into our Bachelor of Engineering programs to accommodate you at any stage of your education.

To determine your general admission requirements, select one of the definitions below:

Ontario High School Students
 General Admission Requirements:
  • Completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD);
  • A minimum of 6 Grade 12U or M courses, or equivalent, including program specific prerequisite courses;
  • A minimum 70%* overall final average**

*Higher averages may be required for admission to programs in which the demand for places by qualified applicants exceeds the supply of available spaces.
**Admission averages are calculated using the top 6 Grade 12 U or M courses.  

Other Canadian High School Students
 General Admission Requirements: 
  • Completion of Grade 12 and the Secondary School Diploma (see the Program Specific Prerequisites section for your particular provinces requirements);
  • Program specific prerequisite courses;
  • A minimum 70%* overall final average

International Secondary School/ College or University
 General Admission Requirements:
  • Successful graduation from an academic secondary school program or equivalent (For most countries, the same academic preparation as is required for university entrance in that country is required for consideration. Refer to Admission Requirements by Country.) 
  • Program specific prerequisite courses;
  • Equivalent of a minimum 70% overall final average (Canadian)

Canadian College
 General Admission Requirements:

College transfer applicants who are applying to a program that does not have a college transfer pathway are eligible for admission consideration if they have:

  • Completed a minimum of 1 year of full-time academic studies at an accredited community college since leaving high school;
  • Completed the appropriate program-specific prerequisite courses; and
  • Achieved a minimum overall average of 70%. 
Canadian University
 General Admission Requirements:
  • Attended a university and successful completion of university level course work since leaving high school/college;
  • Program specific prerequisite courses;
  • A minimum overall average of C or 60%.
Canadian Bible College
 General Admission Requirements:
  • A minimum overall average of C / 60% or equivalent;
  • College must be accredited by the Association of Biblical Higher Education (ABHE);
  • Successfully meets the minimum program specific preparatory course prerequisites at the Grade 12U or M level or equivalent;
  • If not eligible right out of high school, a minimum of two years of full time studies must be completed at the Bible College.

As a first year Software Engineering student you will be required to complete the following courses:

  • Engineering 1637 – Computer Logic Circuits

  • Computer Science 1411 & 1431 – Computer Programming I & II

  • Mathematics 1071* – Vectors and Matrices

  • Mathematics 1210 & 1230 – Calculus I & II

  • Physics 1070** – Semiconductor Physics

  • Engineering 1232 – Introduction to Microcontrollers

  • Engineering 3014 – Engineering Chemistry

  • Engineering 2151 – Electrical & Electronics Technology

  • Business 1511 – Basics of Management

*Students who have completed Gr. 12U Calculus and Vectors with a minimum grade of 60% are not required to take Mathematics 1071.

**Physics 1070 may be replaced with another science course with permission of the Chair of the department.

Lakehead University is the only university in Canada where you earn a Bachelor of Engineering degree and a diploma in Engineering Technology in just four years. All Bachelor of Engineering Degree Programs at the Thunder Bay campus are accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB)

 

Unique Learning Opportunities

At Lakehead, Software Engineering students enjoy small class sizes and learning experiences from a variety of teaching practices, such as hands-on laboratory activities, cooperative learning groups, and plenty of group and individual software projects. Students are exposed to a modern, up to date curriculum, including data science, cloud computing, open source software development, software security and safety, and web technologies.

 

Co-operative/Internship Option

A co-operative/internship option is available for all Engineering programs. You can apply directly, or in either second or third year, and will receive workshops on interviewing, resume preparation and work performance.

You will accumulate at least 16 months of paid, practical work experience and graduate a year later than students enrolled in the regular Bachelor of Engineering program.
