Languages

As economic and cultural ties between countries continue to make our world smaller, the need to communicate as global citizens is becoming more important. Languages are instruments of discovery. The study of language facilitates communication as well as the understanding of broader cultural and historical contexts that influence the way we live.

Lakehead University’s Language program will educate you in the art of communication by providing the opportunity to major in French, and to explore the languages of:

  • Finnish
  • German
  • Spanish
  • Italian
  • Ojibwe
  • Cree
  • Mandarin
  • The Classics

In Canada, the ability to communicate effectively in French (one of the country’s two official languages) is not only an asset but it can be a requirement for many careers. A written, spoken, and literary understanding of more than one language gives you a unique edge both personally and professionally.

By studying in the Department of Languages you will learn:

  • Advanced competency in French - reading, writing, and speaking
  • Cultural literacy
  • Communication skills in a creative learning environment
  • Socio-cultural and literary topics from across the globe

It is not necessary for you to be fluent in French prior to enrolment. Our classes are designed to facilitate language development for those at all skill levels as long as admission requirements are met.

The Lakehead Advantage

Currently, the Department of Languages has a low student-to-instructor ratio.; this facilitates an exceptional, open-door learning environment and provides an enormous advantage for students looking to get ahead or who may need extra help throughout the year.

As a Lakehead University Languages student, you will be exposed to a broad range of courses to enhance linguistic excellence. In addition to grammar, literature, and writing courses, you will also be required to participate in smaller conversation classes to develop French oral skills.

As a graduate, you will be able to speak fluent French as well as write at an intermediate level in accordance with level B2 of the internationally recognized DELF certification (Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française).

Students are encouraged to take advantage of the Ontario/Rhone-Alpes Student Exchange Program which enables participants to study in France while earning credits toward a Lakehead University Languages degree. For more information visit our French Immersion website.

  • French 1200 – Intermediate French OR French 1204 – Francais Intermediaire

Of the remaining three credits required in first year, we recommend that one be within the Department of Languages other than French.

Completing the required first year courses opens the door to unique second, third, and fourth year courses including among others:

  • Language in Context
  • France: Culture and Civilization
  • Stylistics and Composition
  • Women’s Writing in France
  • Children’s Literature in French

In addition to in-class learning, you will be able to supplement your academic background with French immersion experiences including

  • Summer employment in Quebec
  • English teaching opportunities in France
  • Exchange opportunities in France
  • Immersion courses in Quebec

These experiences may be applied toward your Lakehead University Languages degree. For more information, visit our Department of Languages website.
