This panel discussion is the sixth and final session in CBRCanada's Winter/Spring 2021 Decolonizing Community-Based Research online learning series. In this session, panelists will share their experiences acting as a bridge between Indigenous and Western research paradigms and reflect on challenges, opportunities and lessons learned. The panelists in this session originate from varied Indigenous and settler upbringings and have collectively spent decades engaging in research with diverse Indigenous communities across the country.

CMC Microsystems Presentation

Gord Harling, CMC Microsystems CEO, will be visiting Lakehead University on Wednesday, November 20, 2019.  "CMC Microsystems is a not-for-profit organization managing Canada’s National Design Network®.  CMC reduces barriers to technology adoption by creating and sharing platform technologies" (from CMC website).  As part of the visit, Gord will be delivering a presentation on CMC's future, and the CMC services and infrastructure available to researchers at Lakehead University.  The presentation will be delivered in ATAC 5036 from 2:30-3:30 on the 20th.

You are invited to attend a talk by Dr. Kim Anderson, Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Relationships, University of Guelph, on Thursday, November 7, at 7:30 pm in the CASES Atrium, Lakehead University Thunder Bay Campus. Dr. Anderson's talk is titled "Decolonizing Research Ethics: Challenges and Possibilities."

As a Métis scholar, Dr. Anderson has spent her career working to improve the health and well-being of Indigenous families in Canada. Much of her research is community partnered and has involved gender and Indigeneity, urban Indigenous knowledge, Indigenous masculinities, and Indigenous feminism.

The talk is co-sponsored by Aboriginal Initiatives, Research Services, and Indigenous Learning.

NSERC Alliance Program Information Session

The recently-launched NSERC Alliance grants encourage university researchers (faculty members) to collaborate with partner organizations, which can be from the private, public or not-for-profit sectors. These grants support research projects led by collaborative teams that will generate new knowledge and accelerate the application of research results to create benefits for Canada.

On Wednesday, November 20th, Sarah O’Neill (Research & Innovation Development Officer) from NSERC will be visiting Lakehead University to deliver an information session on the new Alliance grants program (both Options 1 and 2).

The NSERC Alliance Information Session will be held from 9am - 11am in ATAC 5035. For faculty members wishing to participate from the Orillia campus, this workshop can be attended by Zoom in room OA2005.

In addition, Sarah will be available in the afternoon to meet with interested faculty members on a one- on-one basis to discuss specific projects or partnerships.

Mitacs offers a suite of research and training programs which enable companies (for example under Mitacs Accelerate)  to connect with top Canadian researchers.  As well, there are international research opportunities offered by Mitacs.  For example, as a student, you may be interested in the Globalink Research Award  which funds research collaborations between senior undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members at a university overseas. Programs for postdoctoral fellows include the Elevate Program.

You are invited to attend an information session on the submission of the NSERC Notification of Intent to Apply for a Discovery Grant.  The session will be held on June 7 from 11-12:30 in ATAC 3004 (Orillia - TBA).  

Information will include:

1.  General overview of the NSERC NOI.
2.  Tips and feedback on the NSERC NOI as part of the review process by two Lakehead University faculty members with NSERC Evaluation Group Experience.
