The goal of this call is to support the generation of primary knowledge and evidence to improve our understanding of needs, preferences and behaviors among specific groups of contraceptive users and non-users, including service providers, to inform the design and development of innovations in family planning methods. We seek proposals that are novel, well-designed and that will provide robust and reliable data; creative, cost-effective approaches to data collection will be regarded positively. Proposals should include a description of how the results could be applied to the eventual design or development of new contraceptive technologies that enhance family planning access, demand or acceptance and provide for sustained use.

The Small Research Grants program aims to support smaller scale or pilot research projects that have budgets of $50,000 or less. Proposals are encouraged from scholars across a variety of disciplines in an effort to fund field-initiated education research

The broad purpose of this fund is to encourage Canadian academics to undertake projects of relevance to accounting academic or professional communities. The research under this program need not lead to publication in a scholarly journal, although it may lead to one or more such publications. The research project may result in a report that is both useful to practitioners and provides background in an area that could be the subject of further academic exploration.

AGE-WELL and the Alzheimer Society of Canada are teaming up to support emerging researchers through a funding opportunity for postdoctoral fellows.

The funding partners, AGE-WELL and the Alzheimer Society Research Program, will co-fund up to two postdoctoral fellows over two years.

The candidate’s supervisor must be working within an existing AGE-WELL Workpackage or Crosscutting activity and their project must align with the research program of AGE-WELL.

The overarching goal of this funding opportunity is to provide timely assessment of health effects and/or interventions to mitigate the harms and impact of the threat posed by the Alberta wildfires and evacuation, by building on Canada’s emerging expertise in disaster medicine and health research response. In addition, the funding opportunity seeks to:

• Examine the physical, emotional and other health consequences on those affected by the Alberta wildfires with a focus on resiliency;
• Generate evidence about novel or existing actions undertaken in health and/or other sectors to help those affected by the Alberta wildfires;
• Adapt existing knowledge from other jurisdictions for implementation in the Alberta context for immediate impact on Albertans affected by the wildfires;
• Catalyze new and existing collaborations with community, not-for-profit, private and/or public sectors within and outside of health;
• Facilitate consideration and application of new evidence about population health actions (interventions) related to natural disasters in decision-making

Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) is seeking applications for Round 3 of its MSc Pop program, a program that supports early-stage, ground-breaking medical science research projects.

Under the Medical Sciences Proof-of-Principle (MSc PoP) program, applicants are eligible for up to $70,000 for commercialization activities. New industry matching cash contributions are required.

The MSc PoP program helps commercialize intellectual property (IP) related to promising life sciences and medical technology developed at Ontario publicly funded academic research institutions (universities, colleges, and research hospitals). The goal is to deliver economic benefits to Ontario, including sales and jobs, through newly created Ontario-based companies founded on this IP, or by licensing the IP to an existing Ontario-based company.

The Dr. R. K. Dewar Medical Research Grant was established in 1987 by Ms. Helen Dewar to honour the life and work of her brother Dr. Robert Kerr Dewar. Dr. Dewar had faith in the future and progress of medical science and had a keen interest in cutting edge research of his day. He was particularly interested in Neuro-Regeneration and Molecular Biology.

When selecting R. K. Dewar Grants our Selection Committee looks for the following elements in successful proposals:

Partnering with the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th provides Thunder Bay Community Foundation with access to matching funding to make more grants to organizations within Thunder Bay and the District of Thunder Bay. These grants will be responsive to local priorities, connected to Canada’s sesquicentennial and will foster a greater sense of belonging, inclusion and reconciliation in our community.

Who can apply?

Registered charities operating within the Thunder Bay and the District of Thunder Bay are eligible to apply through Thunder Bay Community Foundation to the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th.

Community groups and individuals are welcome to work with a qualified donee to make an application to the Fund. In the case of such a collaboration, the qualified donee would submit the application and act as a fiscal agent on behalf of the collaborating parties.

How much are the grants worth?

Thunder Bay Community Foundation will consider applications for grants of up to $10,000 for projects that meet the eligibility criteria.

The FY16 Defense Appropriations Act provides $16 million (M) to the Department of Defense Parkinson’s Research Program (PRP), formerly the Neurotoxin Exposure Treatment Parkinson’s Research Program (NETPRP), to support research of exceptional scientific merit leading to an understanding of the cause, prevention, and treatment of the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra that result in Parkinson’s disease.  Applications to the FY16 PRP are being solicited by the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity (USAMRAA).  The managing agent for the anticipated Program Announcements/Funding Opportunities is the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

FY16 PRP Program Announcements and General Application Instructions for the following award mechanisms are posted on the Grants.gov website. 

IMPORTANT:  The PRP seeks to focus applications and direct funding by providing Focus Areas to address the critical needs in Parkinson’s disease research.  Applications must address at least one of the Focus Areas noted below: 

·         Studies of the neurovascular unit (including neurons, glia, the microvasculature, and the blood-brain barrier) in Parkinson’s disease and changes associated with its treatment.  (For both award mechanisms.)

·         Identification and evaluation of mechanisms in early Parkinson’s disease involving olfactory, microbiome, gastrointestinal, and/or autonomic nervous systems.  (For both award mechanisms.)

·         Mechanisms of neuroplasticity and compensation in Parkinson’s disease, such as influences of sleep, exercise, and diet.  (For both award mechanisms.)

·         Underlying factors influencing the progression in Parkinson’s disease in specific community-based populations (e.g., Veterans) to identify the heterogeneity of Parkinson’s disease.  (For Impact Award applications only.)

·         Supports conceptually innovative research that could lead to critical discoveries in Parkinson’s disease research and/or patient care.

·         Strong, appropriately qualified PI and research team.  

·         Must address at least one of the FY16 PRP Focus Areas.

·         The application must articulate how the proposed research impacts the Parkinson’s disease population.

·         Preliminary data are not required.

·         Submission of a Letter of Intent is required prior to full application submission. 

·         Clinical trials are not allowed.

·       Maximum funding of $350,000 for direct costs (plus indirect costs)

·       Maximum period of performance is 3 years.

Impact Award- Letter of Intent due November 9, 2016

Assistant Professor level or above (or equivalent) 

·        Preproposal is required; application submission is by invitation only.

·        Supports high-impact, potentially high-risk, studies that address at least one of the FY16 PRP Focus Areas.

·        Potential impact of research may be near-term or long-term, but it must be significant and go beyond an incremental advancement.

·        Proposed projects may include basic, translational, or clinical research NOT including clinical trials.

·        Preliminary data to support feasibility are required.

·        Partnering PI option:

o    Provides a higher level of funding to support synergistic partnerships between two or three independent investigators collaborating on a single application.

PIs are expected to demonstrate within the application the synergistic components that will significantly advance the project such that the research outcomes could not otherwise be accomplished through independent efforts of a single PI.

Individual PIs:

·       Maximum funding of $3 million (M) for total costs (includes direct and indirect)

·       Maximum period of performance is 4 years

Partnering PI Option:

·       Maximum funding of $5M for total costs (includes direct and indirect costs)

·       Maximum period of performance is 4 years
