Research Interests:

Chris Southcott has been involved in community-based research in the circumpolar north for almost 40 years. During these years he has published over 150 scientific reports, books, book chapters, and articles dealing with social and economic change in Northern Canada and the rest of the circumpolar world.  Over the past 25 years he has successfully led a number of major Canadian and international research initiatives dealing with social and economic development in northern regions.  These include organizing international curriculum, international mobility, and research outreach for the University of the Arctic, and establishing the Social Economy Research Network for Northern Canada. From 2011 to 2019 he was Principal Investigator for an international project, Resources and Sustainable Development in the Arctic (ReSDA), with base funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada’s Major Collaborative Research Initiatives program.  Its mandate is to develop ways to ensure that a larger share of resource development benefits stay in the region with fewer negative impacts to communities. In addition, he also participated in a number of other international research projects such as the UNESCO International Experts Meeting on Climate Change and Arctic Sustainable Development, the Arctic Human Development Report, ArcticNET, AMAP, the National Science Foundation ArcticFROST network, and the NordForsk funded REXSAC project. In 2024, he was awarded the UArctic Research Chair in Resources and Sustainable Communities.
