The Collaborative Nursing Steering Committee. From left to right: Dr. Lori Livingston (Dean of Health & Behavioural Sciences, Lakehead University), Karen Poole (Director of Nursing, Lakehead University), Dr. Laurie Hayes (Vice-President (Academic) & Provost, Lakehead University), Michael Pawlowski (Vice-President (Administration & Finance), Lakehead University), Judi Maundrell (Vice President, Academic & Student Services, Confederation College) and Bob Backstrom (Vice President, Corporate Services & Board Secretary/Treasurer, Confederation College). Missing from the photo is Committee member Kathleen Lynch (Dean, School of Health & Community Services, Confederation College).

(August 19, 2009 - Thunder Bay ON) Representatives from Lakehead University and Confederation College announced today that the Collaborative Nursing Program curriculum has received national accreditation from the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN). Since 1987 CASN accreditation promotes excellence in nursing education programs, and is the national accrediting body for nursing education in Canada. The purpose of accreditation is to encourage excellence in nursing education according to fundamental qualities and standards established by academic nursing to best meet the need of the Canadian population for nursing health care.

"This seven-year accreditation is a true indicator of the quality of our nursing programs and our graduates," says Karen Poole, Director of Lakehead University's School of Nursing. "It is the culmination of a lengthy process including a self-study report and week-long site visit by a team of Canadian nurse educators. So many people contributed to this outstanding result - the nursing faculty from both Lakehead University and Confederation College, our clinical partners, our students and graduates."

The collaborative BScN program is a four-year baccalaureate nursing degree program that is delivered by two partner institutions, Lakehead University and Confederation College. The nursing theory, lab, and clinical courses are delivered equally at both sites by nursing faculty from each institution, while the non-nursing and elective course are delivered by Lakehead University faculty at Lakehead's campus.

Judi Maundrell, Vice President Academic at Confederation College emphasized the importance of the accreditation in recognizing the exceptional collaborative effort of both educational institutions. "Accreditation is recognized worldwide as an important, objective method to review professional education programs to identify strengths, vulnerabilities, and opportunities for improvement. The Collaborative Nursing Program is truly a success story and one that is now recognized and endorsed by the CASN," says Maundrell. "This, of course, is due in large part to the hard work and dedication by faculty and administration of both schools and the commitment to making the program work."

The collaborative BScN program offers the advantage of two institutions with a rich history in nursing education. Students are exposed to nursing faculty with expertise in the broad scope of nursing practice, who work together to offer students the latest theoretical and practical aspects in nursing. The three year Compressed BScN program at Lakehead University was also awarded the maximum seven year accreditation, and the pilot Community Based/Regional Nursing Program has achieved the first stage towards accreditation.

The Collaborative Nursing Program saw its first graduates in 2006. There are 391 students enrolled in the Collaborative BSc Nursing program.

Bell Presents Lakehead Celebrates….2009 featuring Buffy Sainte-Marie on September 16

image of Buffy Sainte-Marie
Buffy Sainte-Marie, feature guest and performer for Lakehead Celebrates...2009

(Thunder Bay, ON - August 18, 2009) The last time Buffy Sainte-Marie came to Lakehead University she stood before Class 2000 at the Community Auditorium to accept an Honorary Doctor of Letters. The mood was electric and the air full of young graduands eager to hear words of wisdom from a cultural icon, to inspire and guide them as they made their way out into the "real world."

On September 16, Buffy once again will come to Lakehead. This time, she will take her audience back to an era where her music defined a generation as well as expose them to her more recent compositions. As the main attraction for Lakehead Celebrates...2009, Buffy will be remembered by guests as the Native Canadian singer/songwriter, artist, educator and activist, who turned music into a powerful cultural and political statement. Her song Universal Soldier became the anthem of the peace movement. Her song Until It's Time for You to Go was recorded by music legends including Elvis Presley and Barbra Streisand.

Buffy Sainte-Marie released her 18th album, Running for the Drum, in North America and throughout Europe, in 2009, to critical acclaim, "A really wild, ear opening set for those that aren't afraid to take the chance on something that rocks the boat against complacency and does it without a cudgel." (Midwest Records). Adding to an already expansive list of accolades and awards, Buffy Sainte-Marie won her second Juno Award for Aboriginal Album of the Year and became the 25th inductee into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.

Celebrated for its tremendous diversity in song-writing styles, Buffy's music cannot be easily categorized; Running for the Drum is a whip-lash collection of power and beauty: folk/roots, powwow-rock, rockabilly, and dance - a rare breed of pure music fusion. Passionate as ever, Buffy Sainte-Marie uses her latest songs to cover extensive commanding themes, including great loves and protest against environmental greed.

Lakehead Celebrates...2009 is the 5th community celebration in support of scholarships held at Lakehead University to honour the friends of Lakehead. With Bell as a presenting sponsor, the event will once again be held at the University Hangar on September 16, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. An abundance of tapas and a selection of wines from the cash bar await guests. Tickets are $90 per person and tables for eight may be reserved.

For more information and to reserve your seat (tables for 8 can be reserved for $650), please contact Debra McKever at (807) 343-8300 or dmckever@lakeheadu.ca, or go to http://advancement.lakeheadu.ca/.

Lakehead Receives Environment Canada Research Funding

The Government of Canada is investing $30 million over 5 years to help restore the health of Lake Simcoe through an initiative called the Lake Simcoe Clean-Up Fund administered by Environment Canada. Environment Canada, which calls for proposals for this funding twice per year, this week announced that Lakehead University Orillia professors, Dr. Nandakumar Kanavillil, Dr. Sreekumari Kurissery and Dr. Mary Thornbush along with Dr. Peter Lee of Lakehead Thunder Bay have been
awarded $165,000 for a research proposal they submitted.

This is a milestone for Lakehead - Orillia as it represents the first major research funding the campus has received. It also represents the first time an interdisciplinary group of academic researchers from the Orillia campus, in collaboration with the Thunder Bay campus, submitted a proposal together as a team and succeeded in getting major funds. Dr. Kanavillil, the principal investigator (PI) of the project,
submitted the proposal on behalf of his team. AS university located within the watershed, Lakehead-Orillia's commitment to this project is noteworthy and highly significant. Collaborators such as the City of Orillia, Kids for Turtles Environmental Education, Twin Lakes Conservation Club, Lake Simcoe Conservation Authority, and the Ministry of the Environment are whole-heartedly supporting this initiative.

The funding which starts in the fall, will allow the researchers to study water quality parameters, flora and fauna from different points of the wetlands as well as a look at sediment samples. The main focus of the venture will be to study the possibility of the wetlands acting as a nutrient buffer by retaining and precipitating nutrients (using methods such as wild rice cultivation), especially phosphates and total phosphorus, thereby reducing the phosphorus loading into Lake Simcoe. The research area evaluated will include Mill Creek and Victoria Point Wetlands, both in Orillia.

The results expected from this initiative will be published in scientific journals and will be used for the development of a public awareness program concerning the clean-up of Lake Simcoe. This will give the team the opportunity to hire students including graduate students to assist in the research, thereby producing Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP). It is the hope of the research team that along with the research results to help clean-up Lake Simcoe, work can be done with this funding that will pave the way for the purchase of new equipment and the creation of more lab space, which in turn will attract more students and community partnerships to Lakehead University. Finally, this research also fosters interaction within the Lakehead community between the two Lakehead campuses.

Lakehead Forestry Professors Receive Project Grants

(Thunder Bay, Ontario - August 4, 2009) Ontario is making significant investments in skilled trades and forestry in Thunder Bay through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC). Dr. Han Chen and Dr. Mathew Leitch from the Faculty of Forestry and the Forest Environment received project grants from the NOHFC: Emerging Technology Program.

Dr. Leitch received $285,550 over four years for his Lakehead University-Forintek Innovations Partnership project. This project will help develop a partnership with FPInnovations - Forintek Division and will create up to four full-time and three part-time jobs. The grant will also help Lakehead U provide better technical support to the wood products industry by enhancing its wood science facilities.

Dr. Chen received $150,000 over four years for his project entitled "Productivity and Diversity of Central Boreal Forest in Changing Environments." This grant will assist Lakehead University in the development of new research to help improve current forest management and harvest planning. The project will also address some of the top needs identified by forest management professionals to improve Ontario's wood supply. Two full-time positions and 17 seasonal field work positions will be created through this investment.

Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry, Michael Gravelle, and MPP Bill Mauro announced the funding for the projects at 10:00 a.m. today at Confederation College.

The projects of Dr. Leitch and Dr. Chen are two of four that the province is investing in through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation. By providing more than $1.6 million to all four projects, the NOHFC will help to support the region's forestry sector and the city's post secondary institutions. The projects include:

  • Research by Lakehead University to improve current forest management and harvest planning
  • Technical support for the wood products industry provided by Lakehead University
  • A new set of forest inventory tools to improve harvesting wood fibre
  • New and renovated facilities to train trades people at Confederation College

Collectively, the NOHFC's Infrastructure and Community Development Program has provided $170 million to 343 projects since January 2005. Specifically, the NOHFC's Emerging Technology Program has provided a total of $16 million to 56 projects since January 2005.

Media: Please contact Dr. Mathew Leitch and Dr. Han Chen directly for interviews. They can be reached at 343-8342 or 343-8659 respectively.

Orillia Campus Researchers investigate Lake Simcoe Health

(July 30, 2009 - Orillia, ON) This fall, three Orillia campus researchers and one Thunder Bay campus researcher will be funded $165,000 over the next two years by Environment Canada and its Lake Simcoe Clean-Up Fund (LSCUF) to study the role of wetlands as a nutrient buffer.

Dr. Nandakumar Kanavillil, principal project investigator (Interdisciplinary Studies/Biology, Orillia campus), with co-investigators Dr. Sreekumari Kurissery (Interdisciplinary Studies/Biology, Orillia campus), Dr. Mary Thornbush (Interdisciplinary Studies/Geography, Orillia campus) and Dr. Peter Lee (Biology, Thunder Bay campus) will focus their study on Mill Creek and Victoria Point wetlands in Orillia, Ontario. These areas will be extensively sampled to monitor their roles in the reduction of nutrient influx into the northwestern part of Lake Simcoe, focusing particularly on total phosphorus and phosphates. The study will involve the collection and analysis of both water and sediment samples, in addition to plant and invertebrate species from different localities of these wetlands for a period of two years starting from this fall. In selected areas of the wetlands, wild rice seeding experiments will be carried out to test their growth-induced nutrient reduction in the water column and sediment. The proposed study is therefore expected to result in the evaluation of: (a) the existing wetlands as nutrient buffer zones, and (b) the ability of wild rice plants to reduce nutrient concentration in the water, thus reducing their release into Mill Creek and the Lake Simcoe.

Dr. Nanda Kanavillil notes that "this is an excellent opportunity for the faculty in Orillia campus to shoulder the responsibility of protecting Lake Simcoe and its watershed by minimizing the phosphorus pollution. This being the first major environmental research funding received at Orillia campus, we are all very happy and excited to go out and start working."

The Lake Simcoe Clean-Up Fund was established to provide financial and technical support toward projects that will improve the water quality of Lake Simcoe. The Fund achieves this goal by supporting the implementation of high-impact, priority projects. These include projects aimed at reducing phosphorus inputs, rehabilitating habitats to achieve nutrient reductions, restoring the cold-water fishery in Lake Simcoe, and enhancing research and monitoring capacities deemed essential for the restoration of Lake Simcoe and its watershed. The Fund also supports studies that help clarify the current conditions of and help track improvements in the water and environmental health of Lake Simcoe.
