Graduate Research Earns Prestigious CIHR Award

(July 10, 2009 - Thunder Bay, ON) Sacha Dubois, a Lakehead University Master of Public Health (MPH) graduate, was awarded the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Aging Age+ Award for his paper titled "The Impact of Benzodiazepines on Safe Driving." This paper was part of Dubois' MPH thesis and was co-authored by Dr. Michel Bédard and Mr. Bruce Weaver.

The CIHR Institute of Aging Age+ Award, valued at $1000, recognizes excellence in research on aging carried out by emerging Canadian scholars. This is only the second time a student who is part of a Lakehead University academic program has received this award. The other Lakehead student to receive this award was Mun Tran, a clinical psychology graduate student supervised by Dr. Bédard in 2007.

Apart from receiving such a prestigious award, Dubois has also had a second paper produced from his Masters' thesis accepted for publication in Accident Analysis and Prevention - a top-ranked Transportation Safety journal. This second paper is entitled "The Association Between Opioid Analgesics and Unsafe Driving Actions Preceding Fatal Crashes" and will be in-press shortly.

Dr. Bédard noted, "It is truly exceptional that a student would not only receive this award, but would also get published in a highly regarded journal."

Dubois added that he believes "a thesis-based Masters which produces two publications, one of which is recognized by a major Canadian health research funding agency, emphasizes the strength of the Lakehead University MPH academic research team involved. Further, it is an indication of the research potential and opportunities for synergy that are part of the MPH program at Lakehead."

Dubois said, "I'm grateful that our work was recognized by CIHR and proud to have an MPH degree from Lakehead University. The challenge now is to continue this important research, and I am excited to do this with both Lakehead's Centre for Research on Safe Driving and the St Joseph's Care Group Research Department."

Details on Sacha Dubois' project can be found on the CIHR website.

2009 SHADS Challenged To Innovate with Natural Fibres

Shad students in Senate Chambers during opening Ceremony
Some of the brightest and best - Shad Valley students gather in the Senate Chambers during the opening Ceremony
(June 29, 2009 -- Thunder Bay, ON) Lakehead University is once again hosting some of the brightest young minds in Canada during Shad Valley 2009. The official welcome of the Shad Valley students took place on Monday, June 29, at 9:30 a.m. in Lakehead's Senate Chambers. The group of 65 Shads is the largest among all participating institutions.

Running until July 23, Shad Valley is a program geared to developing innovative leaders of tomorrow. Shads (participants) are Grade 11 and 12 students from across Canada and abroad. They are selected based on rigorous criteria that include academic performance and community involvement. Shad Valley puts Shads through a rigorous academic program with a focus on Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Information Technology, Medicine, and Science. During the month-long program, students attend presentations on various topics, participate in workshops, and complete projects in different areas.

Shad valley speakers
Dr. Hayes and Dr. Siddiqui welcome the Shads to Lakehead University

Shad Valley is held at 10 university campuses across Canada. This year, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization has declared 2009 the International Year of Natural Fibres. Cotton, cellulose, hemp, flax and silk are a few common natural fibres used as clothing, food, paper, rope, and insulation, among other useful products. The Shad Valley theme "Looking to Nature and Natural Fibres" will challenge participants to find an innovative way to use natural fibres: through first use (manufacture with new materials); repurposing (reuse of existing material in a new manner); recycling (creating new product from old); or retirement (converting existing natural fibre materials to a final use).

Innovating using triple bottom-line principles of creating economic value while considering social responsibility and environmental sustainability, participants will explore the boundaries between science, design, and art by Looking to Nature and Natural Fibres. At the end of the month, all participants will display and share the experiences of their major projects.

Shads will be exposed to local businesses in Thunder Bay and will live in residence at Lakehead through the duration of the program.

Lakehead University has participated in the Shad Valley program since 1999.

Lakehead Re-Opens Campus Pool – Public Invited to Week-Long Open House

image of David Grad
Lakehead University Student Union President David Grad cuts the ceremonial ribbon to declare the pool officially open

(Thunder Bay - June 18, 2009) Following a ten-month renovation process, Lakehead Athletics today opened its doors to the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse swimming pool during a Grand Re-Opening Celebration and Open House.

Lakehead University President Dr. Fred Gilbert, LUSU President Dave Grad, Athletics Director Tom Warden, Professor Nancy Luckai, and former LUSU President Richard Longtin were on hand for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a tour of the refurbished portions of the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse.

The three-stage renovation project began last August following the LUSU orchestrated "Save the Pool" campaign during the 2007-08 school year. In a Student Union referendum that concluded on April 4, 2008, 1,589 Lakehead University students voted overwhelmingly in favour of paying an additional $15 per semester to cover the $2.5M budgeted to refurbish the facility's pool, change rooms, and reception area. Overall, 77% of voters supported the rehabilitation of the facility, which faced eventual closure due to accumulating deferred maintenance needs. The move to rehabilitate the facility received huge support from University faculty and staff, as well as from supporters in the wider community.

Lakehead Athletics Director, Tom Warden, shared his satisfaction with the final result of the renovation process. "I'm happy to have seen the student body support this project throughout the entire process. LUSU did a great job of supporting the renovation as did the University community as a whole. I'd like to acknowledge their efforts and also thank Physical Plant for its good work during this process. Lakehead Athletics is looking forward to providing university students and employees - as well as the broader community - with improved services through this newly renovated facility."

Dave Grad, LUSU President added, "The 'Save the Pool' campaign was a demonstration of democracy in action. Richard (Longtin) and the LUSU team worked closely with stakeholder groups in the University and outside, and we now know that the outcome has led us to this day. Students can be very proud of this facility, knowing that they had a hand in its renewal."

Free Week of Swimming

As part of the week-long re-opening celebrations, Lakehead Athletics is offering free public swimming during regular operational hours from Thursday, June 18, until Thursday, June 25, except weekends. The pool will run its summer schedule until September 4.

Summer Pool Hours (June 15 to Sept 4, 2008)
