Lakehead Orillia professor named Fulbright research chair

December 22, 2017 – Orillia, ON

A look into the ways in which environmental concerns have been woven into the narrative of contemporary Canadian fiction will be the focus for a Lakehead University professor who is the recipient of a prestigious Fulbright Canada Visiting Research Chair.

Dr. Cheryl Lousley, Associate Professor of English and Interdisciplinary Studies at Lakehead Orillia, will be a Fulbright Canada Visiting Research Chair at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), starting in January 2018.

“It’s a great honour and I’m very excited,” Lousley said. “UCSB has a centre for literature and environmental research that brings together faculty from a variety of fields and departments, so I’m looking forward to developing further international collaboration with colleagues in my field.”

While in California, Lousley will work with the Department of English at UCSB, teach a seminar course on Canadian literature, and begin her research project titled “Environmental Narrative and Memory in Contemporary Canadian Fiction” at UCSB’s Literature and Environment Research Center.

Lousley’s research will focus on the study of contemporary Canadian novels and short stories, looking at the ways in which environmental concerns have been narrated in Canadian fiction. Her interest in memory aims to shift the focus away from future environmental concerns that tend to dominate discussion to look at how our environmental histories tend to be forgotten.

“We talk about a number of great losses and sacrifices made in the development of our country, such as during war, but environmental losses, such as from polluted waterways, mining and climate change, do not tend to have the same profile and public memory,” said Lousley. “We always think that environmental problems are going to come in the future and that contributes to us carrying on in denial of climate change.”

In particular, she hopes her research will unveil the ways that different Canadian contemporary writers have been intervening in the narrative of Canada by the way in which they talk about our environmental past – writing stories back into awareness so that we can remember the ecological suffering that also happened during the development of our nation.

Lousley began her career at Lakehead University in January 2011. Previously, she has been a Carson Fellow at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society (Munich, Germany), and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Leeds (UK) funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and International Council for Canadian Studies. She received her PhD in 2006 in the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University, and her Master of Arts at the University of Toronto. She is also the editor of the Environmental Humanities series with Wilfrid Laurier University Press.

Fulbright Canada, the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America, is a binational, treaty-based, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization that encourages mutual understanding between Canada and the United States of America by providing academic and cultural opportunities.

Lakehead University raised $57,725 on Giving Tuesday

November 30, 2017 – Thunder Bay and Orillia, ON

Lakehead University raised $57,725 on Giving Tuesday (November 28th), thanks to the generosity of alumni, donors, faculty, staff, students, and friends of the University.

Giving Tuesday is a relatively new Canadian initiative for charitable giving.  Seen as the “opening day of the giving season,” it is when individuals, groups, and organizations, join together to share their commitment, rally for their favourite charitable causes, and think about others.

“We’re thrilled with the turnout,” said Deb Comuzzi, Lakehead University’s Vice-President, External Relations. “Last year was the first time Lakehead University participated in Giving Tuesday, and we raised nearly $42,000 – so to top that by more than $15,000 is very exciting.”

Dr. Michel Beaulieu, President and Chair of the Alumni Association of Lakehead University, said he was extremely happy with how much was raised for student financial aid.

“Thank you to everyone who donated online and in person at Lakehead Thunder Bay and Lakehead Orillia,” he said. “Your contributions will help fund scholarships and bursaries that will enhance the student experience at Lakehead University.”

A special thank you to the Alumni Association of Lakehead University, which matched the first $24,500 in gifts.

Lakehead Orillia celebrates people, achievements at Report to the Community

Lakehead Orillia launched its 2016-2017 Report to the Community on November 10 in Orillia, Ont.

Lakehead University launched its 2016-2017 Report to Community at a luncheon on November 10 in Orillia, Ont.  Pictured (from left) are President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Brian Stevenson, Board of Governors Chair David Tamblyn, Lakehead alumna Kaitlyn Watson, Lakehead Orillia professor Dr. Beth Visser, and Lakehead Orillia Principal Dr. Dean Jobin-Bevans.

November 10, 2017 – Orillia, ON

The theme of Lakehead University’s 2016/2017 Report to the Community was Partnerships and Pathways.

The annual luncheon at Hawk Ridge Golf Club on November 10, featured a talk-show style presentation hosted by Lakehead Orillia Principal, Dr. Dean Jobin-Bevans, and interviews with some of the exceptional people who helped make the last year a special one.

Guests included Lakehead Orillia Psychology Professor Dr. Beth Visser, and Kaitlyn Watson, a Lakehead alumna from Education and Interdisciplinary Studies who is a researcher, teacher, and activist.

For many years, Dr. Visser has been exploring the dark side of human nature, trying to figure out how people can be callous, manipulative, and exploitive. “I couldn’t understand how people couldn’t care about their actions, so I started studying them,” she said.

Visser captivated the crowd with stories about her research, including a personality profile of the 2016 U.S. Presidential candidates, and a new collaboration with colleagues from Brock University with the support of a Social Sciences and Human Research Committee (SSRHC) grant that will explore psychopathy and victim selection.

“There is no template for the research that I do,” explained Visser. “Generally our research topics come out of discussion and a meshing of ideas, but at the end the goal is to ensure that it tells you something about the real world.”

Watson described how a first year Indigenous content requirement course had a consequential effect on her education and led her to dedicate her research, teaching, and activism to Indigenous issues. "It was an awakening moment," she said.

Currently completing a PhD at Western University, her work builds upon the goals of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and its calls to action to educate all Canadians about Indigenous peoples and settler responsibilities.

Watson explained how Lakehead not only helped prepare her to reach her goals, but also influenced her to take the road less travelled.

“The best thing about Lakehead was that it helped me grow not only as a student, but as a person. I had professors who had a significant impact on me.  They helped lead and support me along the path to success,” she said.

The Report to the Community was a chance to celebrate the year’s other successes, including the incredible financial impact that Lakehead has on the province.

Lakehead University adds approximately $1.4 billion per year to Ontario’s gross domestic product. The annual economic impact of the University’s Orillia campus on the province was $122.7 million, while its Thunder Bay campus contributed $1.3 billion. Lakehead University employs the equivalent of 6,277 full-time employees.

“The Report to the Community is a chance to look back on the year’s successes and to celebrate everything that we have achieved,” said David Tamblyn, Chair of Lakehead University’s Board of Governors.

Dr. Brian Stevenson, Lakehead University’s President and Vice-Chancellor, said the University is dedicated to a student-centred approach that will lead to student success.

“At Lakehead University we are committed to tearing down barriers to post-secondary education and replacing them with pathways,” Dr. Stevenson said. “We do this because we believe in our students. And they believe in us.”

Achievement Program to help Thunder Bay Catholic District students attend Lakehead University

Pino Tassone, left, Director of Education for the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, and Dr. Brian Stevenson, President and Vice-Chancellor of Lakehead University, signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday for the Achievement Program.

November 8, 2017 – Thunder Bay, ON

Eligible students in the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board can now begin earning financial support in grade 4 as part of Lakehead University’s Achievement Program after officials signed a memorandum of understanding on November 8.

Qualified participants are enrolled in grade 4, and continue with the Program until grade 12, with annual opportunities to earn financial assistance by completing specific requirements at their school, at Lakehead University, and in the community.

At the end of those nine years, the accrued value of their individual financial support will help fund each participant’s first year at Lakehead University.

Dr. Brian Stevenson, Lakehead’s President & Vice-Chancellor, established the Achievement Program in 2011 in an effort to remove financial barriers and help students obtain a post-secondary education at the University.

“Financial need should not be a barrier for young people to pursue their dreams,” Dr. Stevenson said. “The Achievement Program has helped many young people earn credit towards university fees, and this agreement will enable even more students to attend Lakehead University,” Dr. Stevenson said.

Pino Tassone, Director of Education for the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, said he was very excited that students from his School Board are participating in the Achievement Program.

"This initiative opens doors for students who face economic limitations and barriers, making post-secondary education a reality rather than a dream,” Tassone explained. “Our students are our future, and we are proud to partner with Lakehead University to further their academic success.”

According to Achievement Program Coordinator Amanda Stefanile, approximately 19 Grade 4 students from Thunder Bay’s St. Ann School will have the opportunity to participate in the Achievement Program.

“I am very honoured to connect with the many wonderful students and families in the Achievement Program,” said Stefanile. “This program allows students to become familiar with our campus and helps them build self-confidence so they can dream big.”

Lakehead University’s Report to the Community celebrates important people, achievements

Lakehead alumna Colette Lepage, left, described her journey to become a NASA engineer to Lisa Laco.

 November 7, 2017 – Thunder Bay, ON

The theme of Lakehead University’s 2016/2017 Report to the Community was Partnerships and Pathways.

The CBC’s Lisa Laco hosted the annual luncheon at the Italian Cultural Centre on November 7, which featured interviews with some of the exceptional people who helped make the last year a special one.

Guests included Colette Lepage, a Lakehead alumna from Chemical Engineering who is an engineer for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and Lakehead English Professor Scott Pound with student Gavin Shields.

For many years, Lepage has been working with a multinational team of scientists and engineers on NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, the most powerful telescope ever built, at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. “It will look back in time to capture the first light after the Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago,” she said.

The Chemical Engineering program at Lakehead included a challenging curriculum with group projects, public speaking, and mentoring, Lepage said.

“The very best thing about Lakehead was that you weren’t a number. Two professors in particular – Dr. Nirdosh and Dr. Puttagunta – had a big impact on me. They wanted to make you the best engineer possible,” she said.

Dr. Pound described how he and students in his third-year Life Writing class, including Gavin Shields, met with Hospice Northwest clients, volunteers, and bereaved family members, to help write their memoir.

It was a unique challenge. “There was no template for this kind of project – and we weren’t interested in bland chronological summaries,” Dr. Pound said. They wanted compelling narratives that revealed the humanity of each person – a legacy that could be passed on.

“We also hoped that these memoirs would help destigmatize the larger conversation about death and dying,” Dr. Pound said.

Shields, who is an Indigenous Learning student at Lakehead, collaborated with an elderly woman who had looked after her terminally ill husband for four years. “He had just passed away when I started interviewing her,” Shields said. “She was trying to put her life back together.”

He was moved by the way the memoir changed her perspective. “At the start of the course, she was a lady who didn’t think she had done much of importance, but she came to realize she’d had a worthwhile life,” Shields said.

The Report to the Community was a chance to celebrate the year’s other successes, including the incredible financial impact that Lakehead has on the province.

Lakehead named Research University of the Year for third consecutive year

Research Infosource logo

October 27, 2017 – Thunder Bay and Orillia, ON

For the third consecutive year, Research Infosource has named Lakehead Canada’s Research University of the Year in the undergraduate university category.

Lakehead’s placement at the top of the country’s undergraduate universities category is based on the university standing out on a balanced scorecard of research inputs and outputs, according to the annual ranking of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities by Research Infosource, Canada’s source of research and development intelligence.

Dr. Brian Stevenson, Lakehead University’s President & Vice-Chancellor, said he was very pleased that his institution was able to come out on top, once more.

“Lakehead’s success in research and innovation has been steadily growing for years,” he explained. “That is due, in part, to the collaborations we enjoy with various industry, government, and community partners. Because of those partnerships, Lakehead is able to offer more research opportunities to our researchers and students.”

Dr. Andrew P. Dean, Lakehead University’s Vice-President, Research & Innovation, said earning Research University of the Year, again, was the result of the exceptional success and dedication of Lakehead’s researchers, and its Research Services and Economic Development and Innovation teams.

“We’re excited that Lakehead has earned the top spot three years in a row,” he said.

Research Infosource’s calculation of its Research Universities of the Year involves examining several factors, including the total amount of sponsored research funding received by Lakehead University, research intensity (total research income per faculty member), research outputs based on total number of publications, publication intensity, and publication impact.

"Lakehead University is demonstrating a consistently high level of research performance among its undergraduate university peers, both in terms of research income and publication output,” said Ron Freedman, CEO of Research Infosource Inc., adding it’s impressive that Lakehead placed first for the third year in a row.
