Join us as we launch Teaching and Learning Week 2021. In support of the recently declared Year of Climate Action, we are excited to announce that the theme for this year’s Teaching and Learning Week (October 25-29) is climate pedagogy. The week will provide focused professional development for faculty and instructors.

The launch will include an opening prayer from an Elder, and remarks from Dr. David Barnett (Provost and Vice-President, Academic), and Nemma Swatton, Rory Smith, and Brook Ailey, grade twelve students at Superior CVI High School and members of Fridays for Future Thunder Bay. The launch will conclude with a keynote address from Dr. Elin Kelsey. Dr. Rhonda Koster (Deputy Provost) will MC this event.

Keynote Address: Why Hope Matters to Climate Action in the Age of Eco-Anxiety and Climate Doom

In this keynote, Elin Kelsey PhD makes a compelling case for why evidence-based hope is so critical to teaching and learning for climate action. She'll share approaches and sources to integrate real world climate change solutions into our educational practices in ways that enable us to move beyond the eco-anxiety and disempowerment of doom and gloom towards meaningful engagement. 

Dr. Elin Kelsey, PhD, is an author, scholar and passionate leader in the evidence-based hope and climate change solutions movement. Her newest book for adults, Hope Matters: Why Changing the Way We Think Is Critical For Solving The Environmental Crisis was published by Greystone Books in 2020.

Join the Climate Action Park team on a walk around Thunder Bay's main campus and learn about Lakehead University's stormwater infrastructure and upcoming projects. This walk will explore the rain garden, CASES bioretention area, and proposed climate action park. 

Registration is required, limited spots are available.

Curious to learn more about the YOCA and how it works? This lunchtime webinar will answer your questions about the YOCA. 

On November 26th, 2020, Lakehead confirmed its leadership on climate change by announcing it is divesting its endowment of fossil fuel stocks, the sixth Canadian university to do so. Building on this accomplishment and recognizing the need for more bold steps to tackle climate change, Lakehead University is declaring the 2021/2022 academic year the Year of Climate Action (YOCA).

Join us on Tuesday, September 14, from 7:00 - 8:30 pm for the official Lakehead University Year of Climate Action launch.

The evening will feature opening remarks from the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), Dr. David Barnett. Students, faculty, and staff will share how they are getting involved in the YOCA. Join us to learn more about the YOCA, how you can get involved, and our #36ClimateActions campaign. Dr. Andrew Dean, Vice-President Research and Innovation, and Dr. Lindsay Galway, Canada Research Chair in Socio-Ecological Health, will MC the event.

The evening will culminate with a keynote presentation from Clayton Thomas-Müller, campaigner, media producer, organizer, facilitator, public speaker and author on Indigenous rights and environmental and economic justice. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A.

More about Clayton Thomas-Müller:
Clayton Thomas-Müller is a member of the Treaty #6 based Mathias Colomb Cree Nation also known as Pukatawagan located in Northern Manitoba, Canada. Based in Winnipeg, Clayton is a senior campaign specialist with 350.org.

Clayton is involved in many initiatives to support the building of an inclusive global movement for energy and climate justice. He serves on the board of the Bioneers and the Wildfire Project.

He has been recognized by Yes Magazine as a Climate Hero and is featured as one of ten international human rights defenders in the National Canadian Museum for Human Rights. He has campaigned across Canada, Alaska and the lower 48 states organizing in hundreds of First Nations, Alaska Native and Native American communities to support Indigenous Peoples to defend their territories against the encroachment of the fossil fuel industry with a special focus on stopping the expansion of the Canadian tar sands and its associated pipelines.

Clayton is a campaigner, award-winning film director, media producer, organizer, facilitator, public speaker and author on Indigenous rights and environmental & economic justice.

About the Session
Alongside the COVID-19 pandemic is a divisive, attention-grabbing, obsession-inducing infodemic. Moving beyond the discourse of fake vs real news, we probe the relative invisibility of algorithms and the hidden-in-plain-sight codes and conventions of old and new media to provide some perspectives and frames for understanding major news events of 2020.
