Sustainability Course Inventory Methodology
In 2018/2019 the Office of Sustainability conducted a sustainability course inventory at Lakehead University.
All course offerings on the Lakehead University course calendar were reviewed. Based on the course description, a course was tentatively assessed either as a course that includes sustainability (IS) or a sustainability course (SC). Program chairs were then contacted via email and asked whether they would be willing to contribute information, either through an in-person meeting or over email. Through these follow-up meetings or emails, programs chairs were asked to review the findings and note: (a) any courses that hadn’t been identified that they believed met the criteria, (b) any courses that were identified but are no longer offered or have been combined with other courses, (c) any courses that were given an IS designation that the chair felt should be an SC instead (and vice versa) and (d) any courses that were soon to be calendared or in development that would be considered either IS or SC. Not all program Chairs/Deans were available.
The rationale for each course designation comes from AASHE's STARS inventory (pg. 6). Both the IS and SC designations have three different rationales for why a course would fit under that classification.
- 209 core-content courses related to sustainability were identified in this inventory
- 74 sustainability courses, 135 courses that include sustainability
- Approximately 5.5% of all courses at the University are SC or IS
If you see a course listed here that is no longer offered or know of a course that you think should be added to the inventory, please contact the Sustainability Coordinator at coordinator.sustainability@lakeheadu.ca.
