Orientation for New International Students
Winter 2025 Incoming International Students
Lakehead International is excited for you to join us, in person, at our Winter 2025 International Student Welcome Day, as part of our Orientation events!
Orientation provides new Lakehead students with an opportunity to meet new friends, engage with Lakehead staff and departments, learn about supports and services at Lakehead and within the community, ask questions, and gather all the necessary information they need to have a successful start to their term.
Important Arrival Information
University Holiday Closure: December 23, 2024 - January 1, 2025
- We strongly recommend that you arrive before December 20*
- The entire University will be closed at 4:30 pm on December 20, 2024. It will reopen on January 2, 2025, at 8:30 am.
- During this closure, you will not have access to University student services, departments, and staff.
- Security Services will remain available 24/7 during the closure.
- Be prepared with winter clothing. It will be cold.
Airport Transportation Service
Requests for taxi voucher MUST BE RECEIVED BY DECEMBER 18 in order for them to be processed.
- If you submit a request after December 18, you will not receive a voucher until after January 2.
- January 16, 2024 will be the last day that Taxi Vouchers will be issued to new incoming students.
- If you arrive during the closure and don’t have a taxi voucher you will need to pay out of pocket and you will not be reimbursed.
Important Residence Arrival Information
- Early arrivals prior to January 1 will not be accepted.
- Early arrivals between January 1-4 need to email Residence Services and make arrangements. Do not assume you can move in during this time. You must receive confirmation from Residence. Food services on campus reopens on January 4.
- Residence Front Desk is closed during the University Holiday Closure as are all Food Services on campus.

Temporary Accommodations
If you arrive when our Campus and Residence is closed OR have not been able to arrange housing before arriving, you may wish to book temporary or short-term accommodations while you look for a permanent living option.

Please note that Main Campus Orientation activities will begin the first week of school for all new students, including new international students.

Connect with a Current Student
Lakehead International’s Peer Mentor program pairs up experienced Lakehead students with a small group of new international students to help them:
- Transition to university
- Adjust to the Lakehead University campus, the Thunder Bay or Orillia community, and Canadian culture
- Access and get to know on-campus or off-campus resources
The Peer Mentor program organizes activities for all participants. It is a great way to meet new students and explore your new home.
