On 16 September at 7:30 pm, John Foster will examine Canadian oil in a global context – an ongoing rivalry among world powers and regional countries for control of oil and natural gas. Instancing Iran, Syria, Ukraine and Venezuela, he will illuminate petroleum-related reasons for government actions that are rarely discussed publicly. 

This event is made possible by The Thunder Bay Branch of the Canadian International Council, Lakehead University’s Department of History, and Lakehead International.

Speaker Bio: As an international oil economist, John Foster witnessed the geopolitics of petroleum in more than 30 countries. His experience includes positions with the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, BP group and Petro-Canada in three capital cities – London, Washington DC and Ottawa. He grew up in London England, graduating in economics and law from Cambridge University. In the past decade, he has given talks across Canada on petroleum rivalries and conflicts, and authored articles in the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and elsewhere, and been interviewed on radio and TV.

Join us on 4 April at 7:30 pm in ATAC 1010 and OA2006, to hear Ben Rowswell speak on "Meeting the Challenge of Populism  at Home and Abroad." Orillia will have videoconferencing for the talk in OA 2006.

Ben Rowswell has 25 years of experience as a practitioner of international relations and is a pioneer in the practice of digital diplomacy. In his last position as Ambassador to Venezuela, he experienced the destructive power of modern populism.

Other positions over his career include serving with the United Nations in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1993, as Canada’s first diplomatic envoy to Baghdad, Iraq, after the fall of Saddam Hussein, and as the head of the NATO Provincial Reconstruction Team in Kandahar at the height of Canada’s involvement in Afghanistan.

Ben has also advised top levels of government on international strategy in the Privy Council Office during the tenures of Jean Chrétien and Stephen Harper, and at the Washington DC Center for Strategic and International Studies from 2003 to 2004.

CoverThis event is also the Thunder Bay launch of his latest book Creating Canada's Peacekeeping Past (Vancouver: UBC Press, 2016). Copies will be available for purchase at the presentation.

Speakers Bio: Colin McCullough is the author of Creating Canada's Peacekeeping Past (Vancouver: UBC Press, 2016) and the co-editor of Canada and the United Nations: Legacies, Limits, and Prospects (Montreal and Kingston: McGill-Queen's University Press, 2017). His work explores the intersections between Canadian national identity and United Nations peacekeeping from the 1950s to the present. He is currently an adjunct professor at Ryerson and McMaster Universities.
