Electives, Minors, and Certificates
Electives
To meet the requirements of the BScN programs, Nursing students need to take 1.5 credits of elective courses. Electives give the student an opportunity to explore new subjects in other disciplines of interest. Students can choose from most of the disciplines offered by the University. Students can enroll in Elective courses that do not have prerequisites or program restrictions, and that fit into their course schedule. Elective courses can be completed in person or online. See when elective courses are offered by reviewing the timetable for in person courses, and the timetable for online delivery.
Minors
Students who are majoring in Nursing may have the opportunity to work towards a minor. A minor allows you to compliment your degree by taking courses in a subject area outside of your major. A minor consists of (at least) 3 full course equivalents, which are in a different subject from the required nursing courses. In order to achieve a minor, students must receive a minimum average of 60% in the courses for the minor, and 1 full course equivalent must be at the 3rd year level or higher. All courses contributing to a minor must be taken at Lakehead University.
If you are interested in completing a minor, you will need to declare your minor through Student Central. If you complete the requirements for a minor, you will receive recognition of the minor on your official transcript.
Certificates
Students who are majoring in Nursing may have the opportunity to work towards a certificate program to enhance their knowledge and expertise in an area of interest outside of nursing.
A certificate is defined as an approved course of study which will have a professional or an applied focus and will provide learning outcomes that are distinct from any other program. A certificate course of study will consist of a minimum of two FCEs, with a minimum overall average of 60%. Students must be registered in the certificate prior to the completion of 50% of the course requirements for the course of study. All courses for the certificate must be taken from Lakehead University.
