Nursing Skills Labs

Labs are set up during the academic year for students to practice their skills, on the Lakehead University Campus.   Students will be notified through emails when the labs will be held.

In the Nursing Skills Lab students learn and demonstrate the principles of medical asepsis including hand hygiene and infection control. Students will learn to describe and demonstrate various methods of providing patient personal hygiene and students identify the nurse’s role in maintaining skin integrity and preventing decubitus ulcers. Students practice and demonstrate oral nutrition care with a consideration of dysphagia, and reporting food and fluid intake.  Student learn to provide elimination care (bladder and bowel), including measuring fluid output.  Students will demonstrate an understanding of the consequences of immobility by providing safe client positioning exercises, transfers, and ambulation. Student learn to identify non-pharmacological measures for pain and comfort management. Student will demonstrates principles of surgical asepsis when providing basic wound care, wound dressing, catheter and ostomy care. Student will demonstrate skill with oxygen administration and incentive spirometry.  Students will demonstrate documentation that reflects the legal aspects of documentation for client records.  Students will demonstrate safe medication preparation and administration.
