VISU 1011 WDE (Web Asynchronous) Special Topics: Introduction to Graphic Design
An introduction to the principles of graphic design and the application of Adobe programs Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
Qualifications Preferred: MFA (preferred) or BA degree with a concentration in Graphic Design or equivalent in related work experience in the area of graphic design. Must have knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Experience with experiential learning and online or alternative modes of delivery is highly desired.
VISU 1090 FDE (Web Asynchronous) History of Art: Prehistory to Middle Ages
A survey of the artifacts, art and architecture from Prehistory through to the late Medieval period. Emphasis is placed on the historical, religious, political and cultural contexts of production with a focus on Western artistic production.
Qualifications Preferred: PhD in Art History (preferred) and relevant teaching experience in large format lecture courses. Experience with experiential learning and online or alternative modes of delivery is highly desired.
VISU 1091 WDE (Web Asynchronous) History of Art: Renaissance to Contemp.
A survey of the major artists, architects and artistic movements of the early Renaissance through to the present day. The visual arts and architecture from Europe as well as the Americas, Asia and India will be examined in relation to the contexts of production.
Qualifications Preferred: PhD in Art History (preferred) and relevant teaching experience in large format lecture courses. Experience with experiential learning and online or alternative modes of delivery is highly desired.
VISU 1150 FDE (Web Asynchronous) Introductory Drawing
An introductory course exploring a wide range of traditional and contemporary approaches to drawing. Through a series of studio assignments and illustrated lectures, students will learn to use various drawing materials and techniques to examine the fundamental elements of visual communication such as line, tone, shading and composition.
Qualifications Preferred: MFA degree in studio art. Must have a working knowledge of the applications of drawing tools and an advanced understanding of the techniques and applications for observational studies for both still life and life models. Experience with experiential learning and online or alternative modes of delivery is highly desired.
VISU 1050 FA (F2F and Zoom) Introductory Ceramics
An introduction to the techniques of handbuilding and throwing on the potter's wheel designed to familiarize the students with the nature of clay. The course includes clay and glaze decorating techniques as well as the loading and firing of kilns.
Qualifications Preferred: MFA degree with a concentration in Ceramics or Sculpture. Must have experience and a working knowledge for hand building with clay bodies on a large scale, an understanding of glaze mixing and chemistry, and a working knowledge and understanding of electric and gas fire kilns. Must also be able to create and maintain health and safety protocols in the Ceramics studio and oversee a part-time assistant. Experience with experiential learning and online or alternative modes of delivery is highly desired.
VISU 2010 FA (F2F and Zoom) Intermediate Drawing
Explores contemporary and traditional approaches to different methods of drawing. Various methods of figure drawing based on direct observations and other research will be addressed.
Qualifications Preferred: MFA degree in studio art. Must be well versed in contemporary approaches to the medium and the use of unconventional methods of drawing. Must have a working knowledge of digital practices associated with drawing as an expanded art form and experience working with interdisciplinary approaches to studio practices. Must follow health and safety protocols and contribute to maintaining the teaching and storage spaces. Experience with experiential learning and online or alternative modes of delivery is highly desired.
VISU 2011 WA (F2F and Zoom) Intermediate Drawing
Drawing with an emphasis on alternative methods and unconventional tools. Includes observational studies of the human form.
Qualifications Preferred: MFA degree in studio art. Must be well versed in contemporary approaches to the medium and the use of unconventional methods of drawing. Must have a working knowledge of digital practices associated with drawing as an expanded art form and experience working with interdisciplinary approaches to studio practices. VISU 2110 FA Intermediate Ceramics/VISU 3110 FA Advanced Ceramics/VISU 4110 FA Senior Ceramics (F2F and Zoom, bundled as 1 course/0.5 FCE)
2110: Covers hand-building techniques using different clay bodies. Includes the study of contemporary ceramic practices for clay manipulation, glaze mixing and surface treatments. Participating in the kiln firing process is an integral part of the course.
3110: Covers advanced techniques for hand building and wheel throwing clay with emphasis on developing an individual expression of form. Examines glaze technology and firing kilns as an integral part of working in ceramics.
4110: An advanced and intensive exploration of the student's chosen medium. Students are expected to produce a significant body of exhibition quality works of art following an individualized outline decided in consultation with the instructor.

VISU 2111 WA Intermediate Ceramics/VISU 3111 WA Advanced Ceramics/VISU 4111 WA Senior Ceramics (F2F and Zoom, bundled as 1 course/0.5 FCE)
2111: Further development of clay working skills for hand-building sculptural forms and enhancing techniques for wheel-throwing. Glaze chemistry and non-traditional surface treatments will also be explored.
3111: Continues the practice of mastering various techniques used for working with clay. Students will also focus on developing a conceptual framework through a series of studio assignments covering planning, production, and the final presentation of works of art.
4111: Students are expected to produce a significant body of exhibition quality works of art continuing the individual outline established in 4110 and decided in consultation with the instructor. Coursework will be selected as part of a group exhibition for a degree-culminating art exhibition.

3013: An advanced study of drawing from observation, memory, research, and imagination. Emphasis is placed on drawing from the live model and anatomy with a focus on observational drawing. Development of the technical and aesthetic skills required for effective self-expression are explored and an individual drawing series is introduced.
4013: Continues the application of techniques and concepts from observation and imagination. Emphasis is placed on the development of the language of drawing, mark making as an individualized tool, and non-traditional techniques and approaches. An independent series is further developed and presentation issues are considered.

3015: An advanced study of painting based on research and observation. Explores the importance of concepts in relation to contemporary painting and the role of aesthetic skills in the development of subject matter. Individual skills are developed through a series of guided projects.
4015: An advanced and intensive exploration of the student's chosen medium. Students are expected to produce a significant body of exhibition quality works of art following an individualized outline decided in consultation with the instructor.

VISU 3016 WA Advanced Painting/VISU 4016 WA Senior Painting (F2F and Zoom, bundled as 1 course/0.5 FCE)
3016: An advanced study of painting that focuses on the development of painterly skills through research-based projects. Explores the relationship between the meaning of the produced image and the intentions of the artist through the creation of a series of works of art. The painterly methods of modern and contemporary artists will also be examined.
4016: Students are expected to produce a significant body of exhibition quality works of art continuing the individualized outline established in 4015 and decided in consultation with the instructor. Coursework will be selected as part of a group exhibition for a degree-culminating art exhibition.

VISU 0510 FAO (Web Asynchronous) Design Elements and Principles
Students will engage in a series of hands-on projects to explore the foundation principles and elements of design that are necessary for the creation of visual art. Covers composition and spatial illusion in two-dimensional and three-dimensional art through the use of line, shape, value, colour and texture. Students will also be introduced to the work of prominent and influential artists as they relate to the projects at hand.
Qualifications Preferred: MFA degree in studio art with advanced understanding and experience working with two dimensional and three-dimensional studio practices. Experience with experiential learning and online or alternative modes of delivery is highly desired.
VISU1015/MDST 1015 WAO (Web Asynchronous) Introduction to Digital Image
An introduction to using Adobe Photoshop for creating digital images. Through hands-on applications, students will explore the use of layers and essential software tools and controls for creating composite images from multiple image sources.
Qualifications Preferred: MFA degree (preferred) or BA degree with a concentration in Graphic Design or equivalent in related work experience in the area of Photoshop/graphic design.
