Minor in Aging and Health
The process of aging is dynamic and diverse; the interests and needs of an aging population are complex. As a result, the study of aging focuses on a wide variety of topics, including health and active lifestyles, learning, retirement, caregiving, illness, employment, sexuality, coping strategies, and policies and practices that support people to age well in age-friendly communities and societies.
Given its interdisciplinary nature, the Department of Health Sciences collaborates with a number of academic units within the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences (Kinesiology, Nursing, Psychology, and Social Work), the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (Philosophy, Sociology, Women's Studies), and the Faculty of Education, to deliver courses. In addition, the Centre for Education and Research on Aging and Health (CERAH) at Lakehead University plays a vital role in the Minor in Aging and Health. The researchers at CERAH not only create new knowledge, they also play an important role in educating the community about aging and health, and creating a space in which those with an interest in aging can connect, collaborate, and share.
As Canada's aging population continues to grow at an unprecedented rate, the need for experts and advanced education in aging increases. Graduates with a Minor in Aging and Health will find employment opportunities in areas such as: Health and Social Programs, Research, Policy Development, and Education.
