Alternate Demonstration of Course Mastery (in lieu of Presentations/Group Work/ Verbal Participation)

Accommodation Wording: Alternate demonstration of course mastery (in lieu of verbal participation/presentations/group work): Student to contact Prof. to negotiate in advance.

Student’s with an approved accommodation of Alternate demonstration of course mastery (in lieu of verbal participation/presentations/group work) have provided medical documentation to SAS supporting functional limitations in social participation, social interaction, communication, and stress management. These functional limitations may impact their ability to participate in group or classroom discussion, and/or deliver presentations.

Students are still expected to meet essential requirements of the course.

Student Responsibilities for Utilizing this Accommodation

Students are expected to reach out to instructors at the beginning of the term, well in advance of deadlines and due dates for academic components requiring accommodated alternatives.

  • To request their accommodations using the SAS Process prior to or as early in the term as possible.

  • Students preparing for their courses will read the syllabus to determine if participation/presentations/group work are required

  • Students must communicate with their instructor proactively to discuss possible alternatives or options to presentation/group work/verbal participation.

  • Contact the student’s SAS Advisor for guidance if needed.

Examples of Accommodated Alternatives

Students and instructors are encouraged to collaborate to find reasonable alternatives to meet the student’s functional limitations. The student’s SAS Advisor is available to assist as needed.

Some examples of reasonable alternatives:

Verbal participation:

  • Student allowed to submit written responses.

  • Advanced notice of questions and/or when a student will be called upon in class so the student may prepare.

  • Submitting an alternative assignment.

Presentations

  • Student pre-record their presentation.

  • Student to present to a small group or individually to the instructor.

  • Permission to read from notes.

  • Permission to remain seated when presenting.

  • Student to complete preparatory presentation work (not class facing).

  • Submitting an alternative assignment.

Group Work

  • Student working in a smaller group.

  • Student being allowed to choose their group members.

  • Completing the assignment individually.

  • Submitting an alternative assignment.

Considerations
If verbal participation/presentations/group work are an essential requirement(s) of the course the student may be required to complete the original assessment format.
