Occasional Absences Accommodation

ACCOMMODATION WORDING: Student may be occasionally absent due to disability/medical condition; Student to discuss with Prof at the beginning of the term expectations for use of this accommodation.

Students with an occasional absence accommodation have provided SAS with medical documentation supporting that their disability and/or medical condition requires medical appointments for treatment or assessments or that they experience chronic or episodic symptoms that may impact their ability to attend every class.

The intent of the accommodation is to allow flexibility to address occasional absences from class without the student being penalized. If absences are regular, prolonged, or interfere with essential course requirements students should reach out to their SAS Advisor, instructor and/or program coordinator to explore possible options; which could include withdrawing from a course.

Students are responsible for the essential requirements and academic responsibilities of the course and/or program. Students are responsible for making up any missed course work or participation requirements.

Student Responsibilities for Using this Accommodation
  • To request their accommodations using the SAS Process prior to or as early in the term as possible.

  • To meet with their instructor and/or program coordinator proactively to discuss the expectations for the use of the occasional absence accommodation including communication and missed course work; SAS has provided an email template to assist the student in contacting their instructor. The SAS Accessibility Advisor is available to assist in this meeting if requested.

  • To notify the instructor of the absence ahead of time or as soon as possible after each absence by the method agreed to with the instructor.

Considerations when Utilizing the Accommodation
  • Missed assessments/tests will be handled according to the Missed Test /Rescheduling Accommodation if applicable.

  • Students are responsible for making their own arrangements for missed course content; SAS recommends connecting with a peer. Instructors are not expected to provide.

  • For courses where attendance is a mandatory requirement this accommodation may not apply. Students and instructors are encouraged to reach out to the student’s SAS Advisor to discuss options.
