Extensions on Assignments Accommodation (up to 7 days)
Updated August 2023
Students with an extension accommodation have provided SAS with medical documentation supporting that periodically the student may experience barriers that impact their ability to meet assignment due dates. Not all students registered with SAS have an extension accommodation; Students can refer to their accommodation letter for confirmation of their accommodations.
Accommodation Wording: May require time extensions for assignments when linked to disability and/or medical condition; Student to provide extension request to Prof. and SAS
NOTE: A student utilizing this extension accommodation must set up their accommodations for the term with SAS prior to sending a request; an accommodation letter will be received by the instructor(s) and student when this step is complete.
Students are to request an extension prior to the due date of an assignment. This extension can be requested once per assignment for up to 7 days without academic penalty. See Exceptional Circumstances for information about extensions requested outside of these guidelines. Timelines for extensions can be impacted by multiple factors including: end of term, condensed nature of course timelines (Spring/Summer courses), integrity concerns, etc.
The Extension Request Email Template should be utilized to request an extension to ensure that all pertinent information is communicated to the instructor. Students can download the template and save it to their computer for easier access. The template can also be viewed below.

Hello (Prof. Name), My name is (name) and my student number is (student number). I am in your (course, number, section/ex. BIOL 2210 FA) class. As per my accommodation letter emailed to you by Student Accessibility Services (SAS) I have the accommodation of:
I am requesting an extension for disability-related reasons for (name of the assignment) originally due on ________(original due date) and I am proposing an accommodated due date of _______.(not more than 7 days) - I understand that this proposed accommodated due date must be within seven (7) days of the original due date. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding this request please do not hesitate to contact my SAS Advisor cc’d on this email. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration of this extension request. I look forward to hearing from you with your decision. Thank you, (Student Name) |
- The instructor is welcome to contact the student's SAS Advisor with any questions.
There may be assignments where an extension is not possible or a shorter than requested extension may be agreed to by the instructor.
- Examples include: group assignments, in-class presentations, weekly/biweekly assignments (sometimes online) in which grading is provided immediately after the submission date, discussion posts which represent participation in the class, and pre-labs that when not completed prior to the lab may have safety risks.
- Students are encouraged to contact their SAS Advisor if they have questions about extensions on these types of assignments.
- Students should be prepared with their course outline as the SAS Advisor will require specific information about any assignment inquiries.
Exceptional Circumstances
SAS recognizes that there may be significant disability/medical impacts that may result in a delay in requesting an extenison or an extension requested for more than 7 days. Students must contact their SAS Advisor for any further request to be considered.
The SAS Advisor will consider the disability factors that are impacting the ability to submit the assignment; the attendance and participation in the course to date and any communication with the instructor.
Student Responsibilities
Participate in the accommodation process; understand the expectations of the use of the extension accommodation and contact their SAS Advisor if they require assistance or they are having concerns.
Take a manageable course load; accommodations do not reduce the workload of a class(es).
Develop, at the beginning of each term, a calendar scheduling all important academic responsibility dates (assignments and tests, exams and quizzes).
- For assistance and skill building in developing a term calendar, scheduling strategies and time management students are encouraged contact Student Success Centre (SSC) and/or review the resources on their webpage.
