Volunteer Peer Note Taking
From time to time an instructor may feel they cannot implement the "Access to Lecture Material; recording capability for lectures in a class" accommodation in a class. As per The Policy “The instructor shall consult with their Dean and collaborate with SAS to discuss alternative solutions related to the accommodation plan if necessary”.
After collaborating with SAS on an alternative solution the instructor may arrange a volunteer peer note taker. The accommodation on the student's accommodation letter will change to:
- Professor Provided Access to Lecture Materials: Professor to seek/secure a peer note taker; in the interim Professor will ensure access to lecture content
Instructors secure a volunteer peer note taker from the class and have the peer note taker contact SAS (until a peer note taker is secured and SAS provides the instructor confirmation that they are providing notes, the instructor is responsible for providing an alternative solution).
Students who have been contacted by their SAS Advisor and informed that they will be accessing a volunteer peer note taker can access the notes confidentially through the SAS Clockwork Portal. Use your Lakehead University username and password to log in.
Accessing Notes Provided by a Volunteer Peer Note Taker
- Click on the "Course Notes" button and select the "Course/notes" tab.
- Select "Yes" under "I require a note taker" for the course that is providing a note taker. If your course is not listed please contact your SAS Advisor who will adjust your accommodations.
- If a note taker has already signed up you can click "select a note taker" under "Note taker availability".
- If no note takers have been assigned to your course you will be notified when they are assigned via email.
- Once a note taker has been assigned a new button "Notes" will appear under "my lecture notes". This is where lecture notes will be stored for the term.
Please ensure that you check this link for notes frequently as you will not receive notification that notes have been uploaded. If you do not have access to notes within a week of you selecting "yes" under "I require a note taker" please contact your SAS Advisor.
This alternative solution is provided only in specific instances in consultation with faculty and SAS. Not all students will have access to this accommodation. Any questions or concerns should be directed to your SAS Advisor.
